According to ExpressAndStar.com, Wolves technical director Matt Jackson said selling Joao Gomes to Aston Villa for £38m was the responsible decision for the club.

The 25-year-old has moved across the West Midlands after three and a half years at Molineux, having arrived from Flamengo for £15m in 2023. Jackson backed him to enjoy an outstanding career.

Gomes had been widely expected to depart following relegation from the Premier League, though Villa were not initially seen as his most likely destination. That shifted when Unai Emery sought midfield cover after Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United and Amadou Onana sustained a serious knee injury.

Villa acted quickly to complete the deal, while Jackson maintained the sale serves Wolves’ wider interests as they rebuild under new head coach Cesar Peixoto. He praised Gomes as a model professional and family man, adding that coaches and team-mates valued him.

Jackson also argued that clubs without unlimited resources must trade smartly, stressing the aim is to become stronger collectively and noting supporters have long understood that model.

He remains confident Wolves will finish the window strongly. The club moved early to sign Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, while winger Rafiki Said is the only arrival since Peixoto replaced Rob Edwards.

After two weeks of training, Jackson said Peixoto and his staff are getting to know the squad and building a positive bond. He added there will be changes before the window closes, but he likes the team’s current shape.
