Wolves technical director Matt Jackson described Joao Gomes’s £38m switch to Aston Villa as the responsible decision after the midfielder completed his move across the West Midlands.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 25-year-old Brazilian leaves after three and a half years at Molineux, having joined from Flamengo for £15m in 2023. He was widely expected to depart following relegation from the Premier League, though Villa did not appear his most likely destination at the start of the summer.

That picture shifted when Unai Emery sought midfield reinforcements after Youri Tielemans moved to Manchester United and Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury. Villa moved quickly to land Gomes, with Jackson saying the sale suits Wolves’ broader rebuild under new head coach Cesar Peixoto.

Jackson praised Gomes as a model professional and family man, and backed him to have an outstanding career. He said Wolves are sorry to see him go, but argued the club must take responsible decisions and become stronger collectively.

He added that well-run clubs without unlimited resources have to work this way, a model he believes supporters understand.

Looking ahead, Jackson said Wolves moved early to sign Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, with winger Rafiki Said the only arrival since Peixoto replaced Rob Edwards. He said two weeks of training have helped Cesar and his staff build a positive bond with the players. He said there will be changes before the window closes, while he likes the squad’s current shape.
