Chelsea want to keep the pathway open for Mike Penders and think he could be first choice goalkeeper in the next two or three years according to Matt Law.

The Blues signed Penders from Genk for €20m back in 2024, and the youngster remained at the Belgian club last season.

Penders was part of the squad for the Club World Cup but didn’t make an appearance as Chelsea went on to lift the trophy in New York.

Chelsea want to keep Mike Penders pathway open

Supporters would loved to have seen Chelsea sign a new keeper in the summer, but the club decided to stick with their existing options of Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen.

Chelsea had the opportunity to sign Mike Maignan, but weren’t prepared to get near AC Mian’s asking price for the France international.

Chelsea are said to rate Penders very highly.

The Blues already appear to be paying the price for that decision with Sanchez getting sent off against Manchester United, whilst Filip Jorgensen struggled against Lincoln.

Chelsea are said to believe Penders is a “special” talent, and the 20-year-old is currently on loan at Strasbourg, where he’s made a good start to the season.

The Stamford Bridge outfit are said be impressed with Penders and the progress he’s made so far, and Law has provided an update on their plans for the keeper.

“They definitely want to keep the Penders pathway open,” he told The London Is Blue Podcast.

“And they definitely do have thoughts that within the next two to three years, maybe sooner that he is going to be the number one and they believe he will be right at the top of the game.”
