Matthäus and Bergomi honoured at San Siro | OneFootball

A special, heartfelt tribute to two unforgettable champions from Inter’s history: ahead of Inter vs. Udinese, Giuseppe Bergomi and Lothar Matthäus were honoured by President and CEO Giuseppe Marotta on the pitch at the Meazza in recognition of their extraordinary careers in Nerazzurri colours.

Lo Zio and Lothar were two pillars of the record-breaking Inter side that stormed to the Scudetto in 1988/89. It was the first in a series of memorable triumphs that also included the 1989 Supercoppa Italiana and the first UEFA Cup in the Club’s history, secured in 1990/91 following a two-legged final against Roma. That trophy was Inter’s first European success since the era of the Grande Inter.

Matthäus scored 53 goals across four seasons with the Club. During his time at Inter, he won the 1990 World Cup with Germany on Italian soil and lifted the Ballon d’Or. A product of the Nerazzurri Academy, Bergomi spent his entire career at Inter, became captain and made 757 appearances, a total bettered only by Javier Zanetti in the Club’s history.

It was an emotional and meaningful occasion, with the entire San Siro crowd giving the two Nerazzurri legends a warm and heartfelt ovation.
