New Zealand confirmed before their 2-2 draw with Iran that midfielder Matthew Garbett sustained a hamstring injury in training, with Logan Rogerson called up as his replacement. Garbett had completed the team’s preparations before being sidelined.
The New Zealand federation said in a social media post that their thoughts are with Matt and that they are disappointed he will not be able to play the tournament.
Garbett, 24, has 38 caps and 5 goals for the All Whites.
Rogerson, 28, plays for Auckland FC, a New Zealand club competing in Australia, and he now joins Darren Bazeley’s squad.
Next up are Egypt in the early hours of Monday at 3am, then Belgium at 5am on 27 June.
