After suffering play-off heartbreak last season, Coventry have led the way at the top of the Championship for much of the campaign, but their automatic promotion hopes looked in doubt following a run of four wins in 13 games over the winter period that saw them knocked off the summit by Middlesbrough in February.

However, the Sky Blues have rediscovered their form in recent months, and while their 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Friday night was their third consecutive stalemate, the point was enough to confirm their return to the top flight with three games to spare.

Having failed to secure promotion against bottom side Sheffield Wednesday in the previous game, it seemed as though Coventry were set for more frustration when Ryoya Morishita gave Rovers a second half lead, but Bobby Thomas' 84th-minute header secured a decisive point for Frank Lampard's men, sparking wild scenes of celebration in the away end.

The Sky Blues' promotion may now be sealed, but they will now have their eyes set on wrapping up the title, which they can achieve with victory over Portsmouth at the CBS Arena on Tuesday night.

It is fair to say that it has been a long road back to the Premier League for Coventry, but their return to the top flight completes a remarkable rise up the leagues for the club, who were playing in League Two as recently as 2018.

While the current squad have etched their names into Sky Blues history by taking them back to England's elite, supporters will also be grateful to those who have been part of the journey along the way.

After Coventry sealed promotion on Friday night, two former fan favourites were among those to share their reactions on social media in defender Kyle McFadzean and forward Matty Godden, who currently play for Chesterfield and Charlton Athletic respectively.

McFadzean joined the Sky Blues from Burton Albion in May 2019, and he went on to make 171 appearances for the club before departing for Blackburn Rovers in January 2024, while Godden arrived from Peterborough United in the same summer, remaining at the CBS Arena for five years until he left for Charlton.

Both McFadzean and Godden were part of the Coventry squad that won the League One title in the 2019-20 season, while they also helped them reach the Championship play-offs in 2023 and the FA Cup semi-final in 2024, and it seems they were delighted to see their former club win promotion to the Premier League.

Reacting to the Sky Blues' emotional promotion video on Instagram, McFadzean wrote: "Love it, Sky Blues are back", followed by a blue heart and two fire emojis, while Godden commented: "Massive congratulations #PUSB", accompanied by two blue heart emojis.

When Coventry were relegated to League Two back in 2017, few would have envisaged that they would be celebrating promotion to the Premier League just nine years later.

Of course, much of their rise up the leagues was thanks to legendary former manager Mark Robins, and Sky Blues owner Doug King's decision to part company with him in November 2024 was widely criticised, while the exits of long-serving players such as McFadzean and Godden would also have been unpopular at the time.

However, although Robins undoubtedly laid the foundations for Coventry's latest promotion, Lampard has helped take the club to new heights, and with an ambitious owner like King at the helm, it would be no surprise to see the Midlands outfit continue to thrive in the top flight.
