Mauricio Pochettino is urging the United States to think big at this World Cup, leaning on his ‘Why not US?’ mantra after finishing top of their group despite a 2-3 loss to Türkiye.
They beat Paraguay 4-1 then Australia 2-0 before that setback, yet still won the group. Appointed in September 2024, the 54-year-old is said to have a four-year extension on offer, with any decision after the tournament.
He bristled in the SoFi Stadium tunnels, noting Türkiye were celebrating, Australia and Paraguay savoured qualification, and rebuked the press for overlooking his team’s achievement.
Pochettino frames true history as lifting the World Cup, not sweeping three group games. He insists expectations are not a problem for this squad and says they will be ready, stressing he is very optimistic.
Bosnia and Herzegovina await in the round of 32 in Santa Clara. If they progress, the last 16 in Seattle on Tuesday could bring Belgium or Senegal, with a potential Los Angeles quarter-final against Spain or Portugal.
Timothy Weah, 26 and eight years into his international career, echoes the message. He grew up alongside team-mates such as Tyler Adams at New York Red Bulls’ academy, says only home pressure feels different, and that the group are coping. For him, the aim is to go all the way.
Looking beyond this tournament, Pochettino has spoken about building a lasting legacy to underpin long-term success.
