Maxi Gómez apologised after being sent off as Nacional beat Montevideo Wanderers in the Torneo Apertura.

The incident came around the 40th minute of the first half with the score 0-0, when Gómez fouled defender Fabricio Formiliano. The referee booked him, then upgraded it to red after a VAR review, leaving Nacional with ten players. The player said in a post that he took responsibility for the dismissal.

In the same message he expressed regret at not being able to continue and addressed supporters and team-mates. He also praised the squad’s effort to get the result.

Despite the setback, Nacional won 2-0, with both goals arriving after the break, ending a run of two defeats and lifting confidence in the competition.

The red card brings an immediate ban, so Gómez will miss the next match against Defensor Sporting, a fixture that carried added significance given his previous spell at that club.

At 29, with experience in European football and caps for Uruguay, he is aiming to move on from the incident and focus on the remainder of the Apertura with Nacional.
