Maycon handed Atlético-MG start after contentious Corinthians departure | OneFootball

Maycon made his first appearance for Atlético-MG, starting as the holding midfielder in the 0-0 draw with Tombense on Sunday. He played 67 minutes before Alan Franco replaced him.

According to Meu Timao, the outing followed a turbulent farewell to Corinthians at the turn of the year. He registered 50 touches, lost possession eight times and completed 85% of his passes. His ledger also featured two accurate long balls, one key pass, one shot, one interception, a blocked effort and three recoveries.

The match also reunited him with former Corinthians coach Cristóvão Borges, who led the club in 2016.

A youth product at Corinthians, Maycon debuted in 2016 in a 2-1 Paulista win over Capivariano before a loan to Ponte Preta. He returned to help win the 2017 Paulista and Brasileirão titles, then converted the decisive penalty in the 2018 Paulista final against Palmeiras.

Strong displays brought a €6.6 million move to Shakhtar Donetsk, where he remained until 2022. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he rejoined Corinthians on loan, starting well under Vítor Pereira but suffering injuries totalling 454 days.

He finished as a regular and captain in the 2025 Copa do Brasil triumph. A planned 50-50 split of his rights and a deal to 2028 shifted when Marcelo Paz’s arrival cut the term to one year, displeasing Shakhtar, and Atlético-MG offered the original term with higher wages. He departs Corinthians with 247 appearances, 117 wins, 68 draws, 62 defeats, 18 goals, 16 assists and five trophies.
