Kylian Mbappé bagged a spectacular double as favourites France began their campaign with a 3-1 win over Senegal.
This fixture brought back memories of the famous Senegalese win back at the 2002 World Cup. Plenty has changed for both nations since then and any high expectations were at first let down by what was a slow-paced first half.
Of the two sides it was Senegal who looked most likely to score early on with Nicolas Jackson coming closest when his shot bounced off the post before bouncing off the back of Mike Maignan but then behind for only a corner.
After an underwhelming first 45 minutes we were treated to a specular second half, which also had an element of controversy when France thought they should have a penalty at the hour mark.
Kylian Mbappé was in a promising position when he thought he was brought down by Sadio Mané. Referee Alireza Faghani waved away to challenge before being prompted to look at the footage again by VAR. However, he still didn't budge on his first opinion
However, just six minutes later Mbappé did get himself on the scoresheet after a super throughball from Michael Olise – who was shifted to the middle and far more effective after the break – that the Real Madrid man latched on to and finished past Édouard Mendy.
Didier Deschamps will have been happy with his decision to move Olise central and even more so with the instant impact of Bradley Barcola. Just two minutes after coming on, a charge forward from Adrien Rabiot found Barcola who was able to turn and make it 2-0.
Stoppage time gave us two specular goals in quick succession. First, Senegal substitute Ibrahim Mbaye easing past Theo Hernández before firing in an effort that Maignan should have done more to keep out.
But any hopes of a Senegal comeback were dashed almost immediately after the restart by one of the goals of the tournament. Mbappé picked up the ball about 30 yards out and had time to pick his spot and bag his 58th goal for France, making his country's all-time top scorer.
