Kylian Mbappe says he wants to continue making more history with France after become his country’s record goalscorer.

The 27-year-old scored his 57th and 58th goals for Les Blues as they overcame a stubborn Senegal 3-1 to start their World Cup campaign in style, with Mbappe overtaking Olivier Giroud as France’s all-time top goalscorer.

The Real Madrid forward’s double also brought him closer to Miroslav Klose’s all-time scoring record at World Cup finals, with the France captain now only two behind his German counterpart with 14 goals.

Despite breaking the record, Mbappe hopes to continue making history with his country.

“I’m very happy, Mbappe said. “I’m very happy to be able to get involved in sports in my country. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and always put above everything else.

“We know why we’re here. I think I’ll have time to think about these kinds of things later when I stop playing. I know why I’m here; I’m here to help the team, to continue with our teammates.

“We will continue to try to write a great chapter in the history of the French national team. We know the road ahead will be very long, but as I said, we are ready.

“I was thinking of my loved ones; they were all there. I had a lot of loved ones there. My family, my friends, my closest people. It’s always like that when you play such important matches.”
