According to Coluna Do Fla, the Copa Libertadores tie between Independiente Medellín and Flamengo at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium was abandoned amid unrest, with nine arrests and extensive damage.

In total, 113 seats were destroyed. Facilities were also hit, with 13 sinks, nine urinals and one toilet damaged, alongside three security cameras, nine aluminium barriers, a fire-fighting cabin and an access door.

The turmoil followed anger over Medellín’s early exit from the Colombian league and shareholder Raúl Giraldo’s gesture last Sunday, when he waved banknotes at supporters after defeat to Rionegro Águilas. Fans went to the ground aiming to trigger sanctions so the businessman would face fines.

Around two minutes into the first half against Flamengo, play was halted due to safety concerns as home fans hurled seats and bombs towards the pitch. The match was subsequently cancelled.

Flamengo now await a Conmebol decision. The club hope the game is not rearranged and expect to be awarded three points, noting that event safety rests with the home side.

While awaiting the verdict, Flamengo turn to the Campeonato Brasileiro, visiting Grêmio on Sunday in round 15, with kick-off at 19:30 Brasília time in Porto Alegre.
