Sunderland goalkeeper Melker Ellborg has earned his first senior Sweden call-up.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 22-year-old signed from Malmo FF in January. He initially deputised for Robin Roefs, then stepped up after the Dutchman suffered a hamstring injury in last month's 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.

Ellborg kept a clean sheet on his full debut against Leeds United, followed by outings against Port Vale and Brighton and Hove Albion.

With Roefs in a race to be fit for Sunday's Tyne-Wear Derby at St James' Park, Ellborg could start against Newcastle United this weekend.

His club form has now been recognised by Sweden head coach Graham Potter, who has included him for this month's World Cup qualification semi-final against Ukraine.

Potter's squad is depleted by injuries to Alexander Isak, Dejan Kulusevski, Viktor Johansson, Emil Holm, Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, Alexander Bernhardsson and Emil Krafth. Even so, it features familiar names such as Premier League stars Viktor Gyokeres, Anthony Elanga and Victor Lindelof.

A win on 26 March would send Sweden into a play-off final on home soil against the winner of Poland versus Albania. Defeat would instead see Ellborg and his team-mates face the loser in a subsequent friendly.
