Memphis has spoken for the first time a week on from the Netherlands’ World Cup exit after the penalty shootout defeat to Morocco.

Morocco were on top in the first half but did not score. After the interval, Cody Gakpo put the Netherlands ahead from a Crysencio Summerville assist. In stoppage time Issa Diop levelled, sending it to extra time.

With the deadlock unbroken, penalties decided it. The Netherlands missed three, through Justin Kluivert, Jurrien Timber and Summerville, while Morocco failed with two, by Achraf Hakimi and Reda Belahyane El Aynaoui. Ismael Saibari converted the decisive kick to send the African side through.

Memphis stayed on the bench for all 120 minutes. The Corinthians forward was behind Brian Brobbey, Summerville and Gakpo and, unlike earlier World Cup games, was not used.

In an Instagram story, he said he had not yet found the words to describe how he felt and that he was devastated by how it ended. The message appeared alongside a photo of him in the Netherlands shirt.

With the Netherlands out, Memphis has a few days off before returning to Corinthians. He had no break between the end of the club’s first half of the year and joining the national team. His future at Parque São Jorge remains unresolved, with a contract running to 31 July, a renewal offer on the table and a decision due in the coming days, while he is still barred from competitive action due to registration issues with the FPF.
