Memphis could end Corinthians’ 20-year World Cup scoring drought as the Netherlands begin their 2026 campaign against Japan.

The Dutch face Japan on Sunday at 5pm Brasília time in Dallas, United States, in their Group F opener. According to Globo.com, Memphis is the only Corinthians player selected for the 2026 World Cup.

No player on the club’s books has scored at the tournament since 2006, when Carlitos Tevez struck in Argentina’s 6-0 win over Serbia in the second round of the group stage.

Looking solely at Brazil, the last Corinthians scorer at a World Cup was Sócrates in 1982. The midfielder netted in the 2-1 victory over the Soviet Union in the opener, then again in the 3-2 defeat to Italy in the third round of the second phase.

In all, 26 players have gone to World Cups while representing Corinthians.

Memphis was named among the substitutes in the Netherlands’ final two friendlies before facing Japan.

For Corinthians, the No 10 has one goal and one assist in 14 appearances this season, which has been disrupted by a right thigh muscle injury that kept him out for about two months.
