Gaizka Mendieta has moved to explain an on-air mix-up during RTVE Play’s Club World Cup coverage, saying in a social media post that the commentators were not seeing the same pictures as viewers at home.
The incident came in the 35th minute, moments before a Leo Messi goal. Cameras cut to the VIP area, then closed in on Mario Alberto Kempes, drawing a loud ovation from Argentina fans.
From the commentary booth, however, the image was understood to show another personality, prompting criticism on social media after the broadcast.
Mendieta’s message stated that while the international feed showed Kempes, the booth monitors were carrying the stadium big screen, which at that point featured former NFL quarterback Tony Romo and ex-basketball player Manu Ginóbili.
The message also said the production had already explained this on air and it ended with thanks to those following the tournament.
