Gary O’Neil has criticised Strasbourg’s owners after a poor cup finish and European exit, saying the squad was weakened in January. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the former Wolves boss’s comments have caused a stir in France.

He was sacked by Wolves in 2024 after urging players to take responsibility for mistakes. A return to Molineux almost followed after Vitor Pereira’s exit, but he stepped away and joined Strasbourg in Ligue 1, replacing Liam Rosenior who moved to Chelsea, their parent club.

Since arriving, O’Neil has won six of his 15 league games, but cup runs have faltered. Strasbourg lost to Real Vallecano in the UEFA Conference League semi-finals, then were beaten 2-0 by Nice in the Coupe de France.

Both Chelsea and Strasbourg are owned by BlueCo, a company owned by Todd Boehly and other investors. O’Neil said he needs two centre-forwards and that, while the owners plan to support him next season, culture, player quality and squad depth must improve. He added that the January window was mishandled, leaving the squad weaker.

Mamadou Sarr, influential early on after a loan from Chelsea, returned to his parent club. Ecuador international Kendry Paez also had his season-long loan cut short by Chelsea, then was sent to River Plate.
