Lionel Messi did not return to Argentina with the national squad, who were due at Ezeiza on Monday afternoon. He flew from New York to Miami and, according to SuperDepor.com, may take a private jet from there to Rosario, possibly on Tuesday.

The Rosario native was among those who did not board the team’s flight after the 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. Rodrigo De Paul also did not travel with the group.

Messi’s intention would be to spend a few days in Rosario with his family after the physical and emotional toll of the tournament, before rejoining training with Inter Miami.

After Argentina’s opener against Algeria, he was in tears following a three-goal display and acknowledged he was going through a difficult personal spell away from football.

Amid that context, there were reports of a health issue affecting his father, Jorge Messi. The family later said he was under medical observation, recovering, and progressing well.

The situation meant Jorge Messi could not accompany his son during the World Cup, unlike at the edition staged in Qatar.
