Lionel Messi has been named winner of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports. The honour comes as he prepares for his sixth World Cup.
According to SuperDepor.com, a panel chaired by swimmer Teresa Perales and made up of 12 specialists selected the Inter Miami forward from 27 candidates across 12 countries.
The jury cited his human and professional qualities, noting he has earned worldwide esteem through perseverance, modesty and a strong sense of teamwork.
Messi becomes the first Argentine athlete to receive the Spanish distinction. The accolade arrives close to his 39th birthday on 24 June, and before a campaign aiming to build on Qatar 22.
The award recognises careers that, through sport and community impact, serve as exemplary role models for society and young people. The ceremony will take place in Spain, led by the Spanish Royal Family and the Princess of Asturias. The winner receives a Joan Miró sculpture, a diploma, a badge of honour and €50,000.
