According to L'Équipe, fans travelling from New York to MetLife Stadium for the 2026 World Cup will face a $150 return train fare, up from roughly $12.90, a price that FIFA has criticised.
The stadium in New Jersey, next to New York, will stage eight matches and the final on 19 July, with the tournament running from 11 June to 19 July.
The fare is designed to help cover an estimated $48 million to run and secure dedicated trains to the venue during the event.
Without the special price, everyday New Jersey rail users would be subsidising about 92 percent of supporters’ travel. The plan places the cost on match-going fans rather than regular commuters.
FIFA has condemned the fare as high and arbitrary, warning it could deter supporters, and described any demand that FIFA cover the bill as unprecedented.
For each match, 40,000 return train tickets will be sold from 13 May. The 30 kilometre journey takes about half an hour. A further 10,000 places will be available on organiser-chartered shuttles priced at $80 return, on sale now.
