Mexican Veteran Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa's Quest for a Record Sixth World Cup Hits a Major Obstacle
Mexican legend Guillermo Ochoa's chasing history as he aims to feature in his 6th consecutive FIFA World cup in 2026 but the path looks increasingly uncertain.
Ochoa's represented Mexico in 152 international match including 11 appearances across the last 3 World Cup (2014, 2018, 2022).
He was also part of the squads in 2006 and 2010 but didn't play serving as backup to Oswaldo Sanchez & Oscar Perez.
Now 40 years old and currently with AEL Limassol in Cyprus, Ochoa dreams of one final callup for Mexico’s home World cup, co hosted with the U.S and Canada.
However, his ambition's divided fans and media alike, with many urging the national team to move on and give chances to younger goalkeepers.
Coach Javier Aguirre's excluded Ochoa from Mexico’s last 2 training camp preferring Luis Malagon, Raul Rangel and Carlos Acevedo.
Speaking to TUDN, Aguirre clarified:
"We haven’t talked about 6th World Cup. If he’s fit & performing, he’ll compete. But I don’t gift anything and Memo knows that".
Aguirre also praised the veteran’s leadership:
"His composure & influence in the dressing room are unmatched. He still trains like competitor".
Aguirre’s recent selections suggest Malagon's Mexico’s 1st choice goalkeeper with Rangel as his backup & Ochoa now fighting for the third spot.
Despite criticism Ochoa remains determined to make history , 6th World Cup appearance would place him alongside Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo in rare all time record.
