Mexico bowed out 3-2 to England at the Azteca in the last 16, yet their World Cup chapter ended in full voice.
According to L'Équipe, a Raspberry Shake station near the stadium recorded artificial seismic signals as celebrations erupted. Julian Quinones scored on 42 minutes, then Raul Jimenez netted a 69-minute penalty as the hosts twice hit back.
Similar spikes were seen five days earlier when the same duo scored in the 2-0 win over Ecuador in the previous round.
Mexico conceded to Jordan Pickford's long clearance on 36, then after a double error by debutant Gilberto Mora on 38. England were reduced to 10 when Jarell Quansah was sent off on 54, yet Harry Kane converted a 60-minute penalty from another long kick. The hosts could not force extra time.
The Azteca, the largest of the 16 venues, staged a contest worthy of its aura. There was regret that the journey ends here and that the final will not grace Santa Ursula. Mexico also became the first nation to host three World Cup final tournaments, after 1970 and 1986.
From Monterrey to Guadalajara via Mexico City, 13 matches across three stadiums stirred memories, notably France v Brazil in Guadalajara on 21 June 1986, 1-1 then 4-3 on penalties. Despite security fears after violent incidents in late February following reports of the death of 'El Mencho', head of the CJNG, no serious trouble was recorded. President Claudia Sheinbaum stayed away from the stadiums.
