Mexico, Puerto Rico qualify for U-17 Women’s World Cup

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – The Final Round of the 2026 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Qualifiers concluded its final matchday with Mexico winning 2-nil against Costa Rica in Group C on Sunday at the Costa Rica Federation Field #1 in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
Citlalli Reyes broke the deadlock in the 43’ with a right-footed shot into the right side of the goal to place Mexico in front. Mía Urbano delivered the assist.
Kemberly García added a second for Mexico in the 81’ with a left-footed finish in the box.
With the victory, Mexico secures the top of the group with a 3-0-0 record, and advances to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026.
Costa Rica finishes second in the group with a 2-0-1 record.
Puerto Rico (2-0-1) secured the final FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup berth as the best runner-up across the three groups, besting Costa Rica on goal difference.

The victory represented Mexico’s sixth consecutive win in the tournament, matching its second-longest winning streak, previously achieved during the 2022 edition. The current run includes the following results: 5-0 vs. Bermuda (March 31, 2025), 4-0 vs. Costa Rica (April 2, 2025), 12-0 vs. Haiti (April 5, 2025), 9-0 vs. Jamaica (March 17, 2026), 6-1 vs. Panama (March 19, 2026), and 2-0 vs. Costa Rica (March 22, 2026)—a sequence that reflects Mexico’s sustained competitive strength in this stage of the tournament.
It was also the fifth victory in five matches for Mexico against Costa Rica in tournament history, extending the team’s dominance in the head-to-head series. Notably, Mexico recorded its third consecutive clean sheet against Costa Rica in the competition.
Mexico concluded its participation in the Final Round as group leader, finishing with a perfect record of GP-3 W-3 D-0 L-0, GF-17 GA-1, 9 points, showcasing both attacking efficiency and defensive organization. Citlali Yatzil Reyes, with five goals, ended as the team’s top scorer, while also leading the squad in assists with four, underlining her direct impact on Mexico’s offensive success.
Meanwhile, Costa Rica completed its campaign in second place in the group, posting a record of GP-3 W-2 D-0 L-1, GF-4 GA-3, 6 points, demonstrating resilience and competitiveness throughout the round. Lucía Paniagua Cordero, with three goals, emerged as the team’s leading scorer, while Isska Chaverri, with one assist, stood out as the top playmaker.
The defeat marked Costa Rica’s 15th loss in 30 matches played in tournament history, with Mexico remaining the opponent against whom Costa Rica has suffered the most defeats, totaling five losses, a statistic that underscores the intensity and frequency of this regional rivalry at the youth level.
