Michael Carrick has played down concerns over Bruno Fernandes, saying the Manchester United midfielder was not injured despite his late substitution in the 3-2 win over Liverpool.
According to Sunderland Echo, Fernandes looked in discomfort after a first-half challenge at Old Trafford, but he continued after the interval and stayed on until stoppage time as United secured a result that confirmed their return to the Champions League.
His withdrawal raised questions before Sunderland's Premier League meeting with United at the Stadium of Light next weekend, but Carrick said the change was not injury related and that Leny Yoro came on to help close out the game after earlier attacking alterations.
Carrick explained that with only a minute or so remaining they wanted Yoro on the pitch, adding that other substitutes had already been used and there was nothing more behind it.
Fernandes has been central to Carrick's side and is seldom replaced. He was influential again against Liverpool despite not recording a goal or assist.
Sunderland hope to bolster their attack after recent injuries. Règis Le Bris has said Bertrand Traoré and Nilson Angulo are close to returning, while Dan Ballard is expected to miss out through suspension after his red card at Wolves. Joecelin Ta Bi returned to the bench at Molineux and is expected to be available again this weekend.
