There’s a genius move in the works if a recent report is to be believed.
Michael Edwards’ position has come under fire in recent days with the revelation that FSG’s plan to buy a second club has become ‘dormant.’
Edwards was brought in at Liverpool to oversee not only the Reds’ operations from a football perspective but also potentially another club’s under FSG’s umbrella.
This doesn’t seem likely to happen anymore and that could see Edwards’ focus return solely back on Liverpool.
That would be great news because the club’s former sporting director was excellent at his job. Edwards was always attentive and listened to his recruitment team. Because of his nous for spotting talent he was able to find some absolute gems who would turn out to be superstars during his first tenure.
It’s this that Liverpool could be returning to - especially if the latest report is to be believed.
According to Het Nieuwsblad Liverpool are interested in Roggerio Nyakossi.
Who? Right, we miss asking ourselves that before a Liverpool transfer but still having absolute faith in Edwards and his recruitment team to get things right.
There was a time when this is how Liverpool operated. They didn’t spent £450m, they spent maybe a quarter of that and created superstars.
It’s the Liverpool way and recently this ethos at the club has gotten lost.
But Nyakossi could be the return back to the old ways.
So just who is he? And why could he be such a smart signing?
He’s 22-years-old and plays for OH Leuven in the Jupiler Pro League in Belgium. He’s a Swiss international and has been a regular at all international youth levels, even catching the eye at the U20 World Cup in 2023.
In terms of his position, Nyakossi is a centre-back. He’s plays predominantly on the left side of the defence and is left-footed, which is an area where Liverpool are lacking depth behind Van Dijk.
One of the things that stands about Nyakossi is that he is extremely fast. He averages over 7 recoveries per 90 minutes this season and wins over 68% of his defensive duels.
Crucially, he’s extremely comfortable on the ball. He’s excellent at building out from the back and instigating attacks.
There’s something Joel Matip esque about the way he can step out from defence and go on exciting runs from the back.
In many ways, he looks like an absolute gem and this could turn out to be a genius transfer. It’s what we’ve become to expect from Edwards and it looks like he might finally be back again.
