The Reds appear to already have one eye on potential additions to Kim Hellberg's squad

With the Championship season nearing its conclusion, it is fair to say that there are some clubs in the division who may already be planning for life beyond the end of the current campaign.

Aside from Coventry City, though, who have re-established a nine-point cushion at the top of the table, it very much remains anybody's guess as to who is likely to join the Sky Blues in the Premier League next season, as just two points currently separate Middlesbrough from Ipswich Town and Millwall in the automatic promotion race.

It has certainly been an unforgettable season at the Riverside Stadium in many ways, with Kim Hellberg largely able to build on the positive start which the Teesside club made in its early weeks under Rob Edwards, before his controversial move to the Premier League's bottom club, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

As such, there is still a high chance that the North East and West Midlands clubs could be swapping places in the footballing pyramid for next season, at least, depending on how the upcoming weeks pan out.

And a fresh update has emerged regarding a potential transfer battle the Reds are set to face, and it involves another club who appear destined for the Championship.

Middlesbrough facing potential Burnley FC transfer battle for FC Augsburg star Robin Fellhauer

Since arriving at the Riverside late in 2025, Hellberg hasn't made drastic changes to his starting lineup and the squad as a whole.

Indeed, during his only transfer window as Boro boss thus far, only four players were signed, with the standout of those being Jeremy Sarmiento from Brighton and Hove Albion whilst Joe Wildsmith, Finley Munroe and Leo Castledine have added extra depth whilst being limited in their own gametime.

However, with a first pre-season on Teesside looming large for Hellberg - and one which could see Middlesbrough gear up for a Premier League campaign - speculation over potential transfers has started to come to the fore.

With that being said, it has been reported by Sky Deutschland that the Reds are amongst a clutch of English sides monitoring the situation of FC Augsburg's versatile midfielder, Robin Fellhauer.

The publication state that the 28-year-old, who is known for his versatility, was previously on the radar of Burnley, and that after the Clarets' initial interest, they could face a potential transfer battle from fellow English clubs including Middlesbrough.

Fellhauer has only been with the Bavarian side since the beginning of the season after they activated a high six-figure release clause to beat the likes of FC Koln and Werder Bremen to his signature on a four-year contract from FC Elversberg, where he was previously club captain.

He has made 29 appearances in all competitions this term, scoring twice as well as featuring in a range of positions, including right and left midfield, as well as his natural position in the centre.

His two strikes have also come when featuring on the right flank against VfL Wolfsburg and, most recently, RB Leipzig on March 7th, with Augsburg currently 10th in the Bundesliga with seven matches to go.

Robin Fellhauer could be an asset for Middlesbrough if they seal FC Augsburg transfer deal

This potential signing could be one of great value for Middlesbrough if they were to be successful in the transfer battle.

With Fellhauer able to feature in several positions, this is not too dissimilar to the likes of Alan Browne, Aidan Morris and Tommy Conway in Hellberg's current squad, with the trio often asked to fulfill different roles depending on the opposition.

However, the deal could also hinge on whether they are a Premier League club in two months' time when the transfer window reopens, otherwise the German could move elsewhere.
