Middlesbrough set for £20m windfall from Rogers transfer | OneFootball

Middlesbrough stand to earn a further £20.3m from Morgan Rogers’ move to Chelsea, thanks to a sell-on clause agreed with Aston Villa.

The Championship club inserted the provision when they sold Rogers to Villa in January 2024. It entitles them to 20 per cent of any profit Villa make on his sale.

The windfall completes a remarkable piece of business. Boro sold Rogers to Villa for £15.5m, and the sell-on clause now delivers a substantial second payment following his British-record £117m switch. In total, they will have made £35.8m from the winger.

The profit margin is extraordinary. Rogers cost Middlesbrough just £1.1m when they signed him from Manchester City in July 2023, meaning £34.7m of that total is pure profit. He spent only six months at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro believe the figure is a record. Sources at the club regard it as the biggest sell-on fee ever received by an English club, and possibly a world record for such a clause.

The deal reflects the club’s shrewd recruitment. Middlesbrough have repeatedly identified and developed young talent for profit in recent years, while continuing to push for promotion from the Championship.

Rogers, meanwhile, is closing in on his Chelsea move. Sky Sports reports he will undergo a medical in London on Monday, once he returns from World Cup duty with England, before signing a contract that could run for seven years.

His rise has been rapid since leaving Teesside. Rogers scored 21 league goals in 85 appearances for Villa, helped them win the Europa League, and established himself as an England international with 21 caps.

The sale forms part of a turbulent summer at Villa Park. Rogers follows Youri Tielemans out of the club, with the midfielder having joined Manchester United, though Villa have since signed Johan Manzambi and Joao Gomes.
