Middlesbrough have issued a strongly worded response over an alleged spying incident, urging a sporting sanction that would stop Southampton playing in the Championship play-off final.
The club said in a statement that it had not been permitted to take part in the EFL’s disciplinary process against Southampton, arguing it is directly affected, holds relevant evidence and that competitive fairness has been compromised.
Boro allege Southampton observed and recorded a training session before their two-legged semi-final. They contend such conduct strikes at the core of sporting integrity and fair play.
Southampton beat Middlesbrough in the semi-finals, a 0-0 first leg followed by a 1-2 defeat for Boro after extra time.
The play-off final between Southampton and Hull City remains scheduled for 23 May at Wembley, subject to a disciplinary hearing that must take place before 19 May and could yet alter arrangements.
Middlesbrough have reserved all legal rights, while the EFL is working on contingency plans depending on the eventual decision.
