Miguelito started for Bolivia in a 4-0 friendly defeat to Algeria at CPKC Stadium in Kankas, USA, on Wednesday night, and is edging closer to a new Santos deal. Defender Marcelo Contreras also started.
According to Diario Do Peixe, Santos have tabled an improved proposal for the attacking midfielder to renew, with a new agreement expected to run for three years and be signed in the coming weeks.
He earned a starting berth before the break by scoring and assisting in recent club outings, which prompted the club to restart talks with his camp. The senior squad are on holiday, but Miguelito remains on Bolivia duty.
He also started last Saturday’s 4-0 loss to Scotland, when Contreras came on. On Wednesday he again began the match against Algeria, this time alongside his Santos team-mate.
He remains under contract until 24 April 2027, but talks began months ago and stalled, with his representative unhappy with an initial financial offer and the sporting plan. Santos have since improved both, leaving the player more encouraged. Miguelito will return to Brazil, and his staff are considering a trip to the Baixada Santista next week to discuss terms.
This season he has played 20 games, with one goal and three assists. He featured in eight of nine Paulistão matches, setting up a goal against Velo Clube, and played eight times in Brasileirão, scoring against Vitória and assisting Gabigol against Grêmio and Vitória. He appeared once in Copa do Brasil and three times in the Sudamericana.
