Mike Maignan was rescued by his right post as France survived an early scare against Senegal in their 2026 World Cup opener, reaching half-time at 0-0 on Tuesday night.
L'Équipe reports that France were put under pressure for much of the first period.
In the 25th minute, Kylian Mbappé lost the ball and Nicolas Jackson, on loan this season from Chelsea to Bayern Munich, burst in behind and left Dayot Upamecano trailing before striking with his left foot.
The shot thudded against Maignan’s right post, then hit the goalkeeper’s right leg, and might easily have gone in. Instead it ran behind for a corner, which came to nothing.
In stoppage time, former Rennes winger Ismaïla Sarr blazed over from close range at 45+6 as Senegal continued to threaten.
