Mikel Merino ignites Pamplona celebrations at Navarra reception for world champions | OneFootball

Pamplona erupted as Mikel Merino and Spain’s sports psychologist Javier López Vallejo were received by Navarra’s president María Chivite at the Palacio de Navarra, a civic tribute to the new world champions that drew crowds to the Plaza del Castillo.

According to as.com, the reception honoured the Navarrese members of the national team after they were crowned world champions. Nico Williams had also been invited but declined due to diary commitments.

Merino said he had nothing prepared, then thanked supporters for what he called a unique achievement. He highlighted the backing of family and fans, and said he felt privileged to be there, grateful for the chance to represent Navarre’s values, naming strength, commitment, respect and the rashmia navarra spirit.

Chivite told the honourees that winning a World Cup is probably the greatest feat a sports person can achieve, and underlined the collective work behind it, saying the team showed that unity makes you stronger. Merino added that he was proud to represent all of Navarra as well as possible.

The event ended around 19:15 with a balcony greeting at the palace as dozens filled the square, chanting “campeones, campeones”. A visibly moved Merino shouted “Viva San Fermín, Gora San Fermín”. Javi Martínez, a 2010 world champion, also expressed pride in being Navarrese and thanked supporters.
