Real Sociedad have donated the shirt worn by Mikel Merino in the 2021 Copa del Rey final, now on display at Legends, LaLiga’s football museum in Madrid.

According to Diario Vasco, Legends, marketed as The Home Of Football and presented by LALIGA, spans seven floors and 4,200 square metres in Puerta del Sol.

The decider at La Cartuja was played behind closed doors due to the pandemic and was settled by Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty. Merino, now an Arsenal player, was named MVP of the match.

The txuri-urdin jersey was bespoke for the occasion, and Real lifted the Copa 34 years after their previous triumph.

Club great and institutional representative Xabi Prieto said the shirt symbolises a special achievement for supporters and the wider Real family, adding that having it in Legends helps the club share and preserve the memory.

LEGENDS chief executive Daphne Villegas said the addition enables fans to connect directly with football’s great moments and reflects a milestone for a historic LaLiga club.

The shirt is displayed in the museum hall, linked to the final of 3 April 2021.

For Merino, the inclusion will be a source of satisfaction. He recently underwent surgery on Monday for a stress fracture in his right ankle, leaving his World Cup hopes very much under threat, and posted that the operation is done, he feels closer to returning, and he thanked supporters for their messages.
