Roma’s attacking crisis is facing fierce competition on the transfer market: their top attacking target, Joshua Zirkzee, has also found itself in AC Milan’s sights.
The Dutch striker, a longtime Rossoneri favorite now overshadowed by Manchester United, is the number one target for Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma, who are desperately searching for a striker in January after Evan Ferguson’s loan failed, with him set to return to Brighton.
The transfer marathon hasn’t officially begun, but AC Milan has already made its way to the transfer window, with sporting director Igli Tare placing him at the top of the list.
Although the Rossoneri already have Leao and Pulisic in their squad, the disappointing performances of Gimenez and Nkunku have prompted the Rossoneri to explore the prospect of a new striker.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, initial contact with super agent Kia Joorabchian has already taken place in recent weeks.
For Roma, the arrival of Zirkzee is vital to turning their attack around. However, the presence of AC Milan complicates an already complex operation.
Manchester United’s conditions are stringent: the English club is open to a loan, but only with an obligation to buy in June, set at around €35 million, a figure Roma is reluctant to spend immediately.
The Giallorossi are banking on United’s need to streamline their attack, following the €42.5 million they paid two summers ago for Zirkzee, and on the player’s desire to return to Serie A.
Roma’s move is also tied to resolving their outgoing problems, primarily the sale of Ferguson, who has no termination clause and therefore requires new negotiations with Brighton.
