La Gazzetta dello Sport have revealed the numbers behind Fenerbahçe’s move to Milan’s Rafa Leão.
The once-cherised Portugal international found himself booed by the San Siro crowd on matchdays towards the end of last season, embodying on his own the downturn the club have endured since winning Serie A in 2021/22.
It has been widely believed that Milan would move the 27-year-old on this summer, while he still has a substantial market value. And there is no shortage of suitors.
From Chelsea, Man United, to Barça, several big clubs have been linked with him in recent months, with superagent Jorge Mendes playing intermediary and trying his best to find the most desirable deal for the club. Now, the Turkish heavyweights have emerged as frontrunners for his signature.
Sarı-Lacivertliler are willing to offer Milan at least €40 million in transfer fee, but the number can reach upto €50 million with add-ons. To Leão, they are offering €8 million per year in base salary, a €1.5m bonus if he makes more than 20 appearances, another €1.5 million if he scores 15 goals or more, and another million euro if the team win the Süper Lig. These terms are to remain valid for all five years of his proposed contract.
Leão’s current Milan contract, running until June 2028, fetches him a gross annual wage of €6.41 million, with another €2.56 million in potential add-ons.
Milan have been looking at the €50m price tag for a while, congnisant of the fact that this might be as good at gets for them now in terms of Leão barring a late, unexpected bidding war. So if Fenerbahçe can make an offer close to that number, Leão will be as good as theirs.
Türkiye has become quite the landing spot for big-name players who demand big wages but are not in demand among the European elite. Victor Osimhen is the leading example of a Serie A star of recent years who has found a home in the country, and with the offer Fenerbahçe are offering Leão, with an improved base salary and some very gettable add-ons, only a a club with a bigger profile and continental ambitions could pry the Portuguese away.
