A minute’s silence was held before the World Cup quarter-final between Norway and England at Hardrock Stadium in Miami, in tribute to Jayden Adams, who has died.
The South African federation said in a statement that his humility, outstanding talent and pride in representing the country would always be remembered. Adams was found dead in a Cape Town hotel, and the circumstances have not been disclosed.
The 25-year-old had nine caps and one goal for South Africa, and featured at the 2026 World Cup.
He started the first two Group A games, a 0-2 defeat to Mexico and a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic.
He came on in the third match, a 1-0 win over South Korea, then remained on the bench for the round of 16 loss to Canada, 0-1.
