Blackburn Rovers have eyed a move for Huddersfield Town forward Joe Taylor, who excelled while on loan with Wigan Athletic

Blackburn Rovers are vying to strengthen their attack ahead of the upcoming Championship season, having endured an underwhelming campaign last term.

The Lancashire outfit finished 20th in the second tier last season, as former boss Michael O'Neill steered them away from the relegation zone, before opting against staying at Ewood Park beyond his short-term deal.

Rovers have subsequently re-appointed Tony Mowbray, who was previously in charge from 2017 to 2022, overseeing their promotion from League One in 2018.

Blackburn now hope that Mowbray can lead them to a top-half finish in the Championship, having endured relegation battles in two of the last three seasons.

The Ewood Park club's main issue in the Championship last season was that they had one of the worst attacks in the league, scoring just 42 goals in their 46 fixtures.

With that in mind, Blackburn have eyed a move for Huddersfield Town striker Joe Taylor, who has also attracted interest from Sheffield Wednesday.

Taylor fell out of favour at Huddersfield, but enjoyed a successful loan spell with Wigan Athletic last term, scoring 11 goals in 21 League One appearances for the Latics.

Football League World asked our Rovers fan pundit, Simon Middlehurst, if he would welcome the addition of the 23-year-old.

Middlehurst told FLW: "To be honest with you, another player that's got experience at that level, but we need someone who's consistently scoring goals.

"That's something that we've lacked the last few seasons, ever since Sammie Szmodics left. Especially if you look at last season, we just didn't score enough goals.

"So, it's good that we're looking to bring bodies in, but at the same time, we need to start bringing players in that know where the back of the net is on a consistent basis.

"That's something that we're severely lacking. That's something that I'm sure that Tony Mowbray and his team will be addressing (in) pre-season, to try and bring in a goalscoring threat leading into next season."

Taylor has previously played in the Championship, thanks to his previous spells with Peterborough United and Luton Town, but he has never scored in the second tier.

However, while on loan with Lincoln City in the 2023/24 season and when with Wigan last term, the former Wales Under-21 international proved he is clinical in League One.

Taylor scored 11 League Two goals for Colchester United in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign, before successfully bridging the gap between the fourth tier and the third tier.

Although the striker's best form has never come for his current club, Huddersfield, he has been a consistent scorer in League One for both Lincoln and Wigan.

Taylor scored at a rate of over one goal per every two third-tier games for the Latics, which is particularly impressive given the fact that Gary Caldwell's side were battling against relegation.

The 23-year-old's Wigan exploits suggest that he is capable of making the step-up to the Championship, amid Blackburn's interest in his services.

Taylor could also be tempted by Sheffield Wednesday's interest, though, as the Owls are vying to win promotion from League One at the first time of asking, following David Storch's takeover.
