New York City FC CEO Brad Sims has confirmed the club's interest in signing Christian Pulisic, stating, "We're believers that Christian is going to want to play in MLS, wants to be back home." While Sims acknowledged the move is currently "dead in the water" with AC Milan unwilling to sell, the timing of MLS's structural changes creates a potential pathway for the transfer.

Contract timing aligns with MLS calendar shift

Pulisic's current AC Milan contract runs through June 2027, with a club option to extend for another year. This expiration date coincides perfectly with MLS's new calendar structure, which begins in July 2027 and runs into early 2028, aligning with European leagues. NYCFC's new Etihad Park stadium is scheduled to open on July 17, 2027, at the start of the league's restructured season.

The calendar shift will align MLS's transfer windows with Europe, allowing teams to pursue significant talents at younger ages and flex North American financial might. This structural change removes a historical barrier that complicated mid-season transfers between leagues operating on different schedules.

Financial leverage shifts with contract expiration

Reports indicate NYCFC has offered Pulisic a contract worth $10 million per year, which would make him one of MLS's highest-paid players. The 27-year-old's disappointing 2026 World Cup performance, in which he was outshone by Folarin Balogun and the team crashed out 4-1 to Belgium in the round of 16, may affect his European market value.

Pulisic ended his 2025-26 club season in a career-worst scoreless streak, failing to score in 19 games after December 28. His poor form contributed to AC Milan surrendering their Champions League place on the final matchday of Serie A. This performance trajectory strengthens MLS's negotiating position as his contract approaches expiration.

League-wide interest creates a competitive market

Sims acknowledged universal MLS interest, stating: "If you ask any of my 29 counterparts across the league if they would be interested in having Christian Pulisic on their team, I'm pretty sure you'd get 29 yesses." The Athletic's Tom Bogert confirmed, "NYCFC is not the only MLS team that would chase Pulisic if Milan softened their stance."

NYCFC is expected to pursue a big-name player to lead the team's next era alongside their new stadium, with an American star like Pulisic or an aging European veteran as potential options. The club's history includes World Cup winners David Villa and Andrea Pirlo, establishing a precedent for marquee signings.

The convergence of Pulisic's contract timeline, MLS's calendar restructuring, and NYCFC's stadium opening creates unprecedented conditions for a transfer that seemed impossible under the league's previous structure. Whether AC Milan exercises their one-year extension option will determine if this window opens in 2027 or 2028, but the structural pieces are aligning for Pulisic's eventual MLS arrival.
