Tony D’Amico remains the number one candidate to become AC Milan’s new sporting director, despite the words of Atalanta’s CEO.

We are at the beginning of May, less than a month from the end of a season with few highs and many lows, and Milan’s search for a new director has not yet been concluded despite time being of the absolute essence.

Many names have been mentioned from Andrea Berta and Igli Tare to Fabio Paratici and Giovanni Manna, but one stands out above all on Giorgio Furlani’s list: Tony D’Amico.

D’Amico has been heavily linked with a move to Milan over the last few weeks and it is above all the CEO that is very keen on hiring the 45-year-old. The problem has always been the contract with Atalanta (running until 2027), and it remains the big hurdle

In an event at Gewiss Stadium for their new sponsor New Balance, Atalanta CEO Percassi was asked about the future of D’Amico. He made it clear that the director has a significant role at the club for next season.

“Will he [D’Amico] also wear New Balance next season? Yes, he’s a fundamental director for us and will have the enormous task of creating a competitive Atalanta. I have great faith in him, he’s happy to stay. Now we are focused on this end of the season, let’s keep working,” he stated.

Furlani’s determination

D’Amico, like Gasperini , has been one of the cornerstones of the Atalanta project, surpassing expectations and bringing triumphs like the Europa League. However, Furlani will still try to make a move for the Atalanta director, MilanNews report.

The Rossoneri CEO will negotiate with Atalanta to try to free D’Amico, who these days is focused – like the entire club – on the end of the season and the fight to secure qualification for the 2025-26 Champions League.

Percassi’s words were firm but they were ultimately only a statement of his will, and we need to see what D’Amico’s personal desire will be. What is certain is that Furlani will make a concrete attempt in the next few days.
