Star man is set to leave Anfield this summer when contract expires
Mohamed Salah has issued a damning indictment of Liverpool’s style of play after the Reds’ Champions League hopes took a major blow.
Arne Slot’s side were thrashed 4-2 by Aston Villa on Friday night, in a result that saw the Villans confirm their place in Europe’s top competition.
Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League table - which, this season, would see them qualify - but they had the chance to cement their spot at Villa Park and spurned it.
Had the Merseysiders won in Birmingham, they would have qualified for the Champions League, leaving Villa to battle it out with Bournemouth and Brighton and Hove Albion for fifth.
Instead, it will be Liverpool that do so on the final day, with both Bournemouth and Brighton able to close the gap on the reigning champions to just one point or three points should both sides win their penultimate matches against Manchester City and Leeds respectively.
The game, Salah’s second-to-last for Liverpool after revealing that he would be leaving Anfield come the expiration of his contract, prompted the Reds’ star man to release a statement on his social media accounts to blast his side’s performances.
“I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions,” he wrote.
“It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that. Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve.
“I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies.
“That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.
“Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games. Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on.
“As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”
Liverpool and Slot have come under scrutiny for their play style throughout the campaign, with the Dutchman looking to put his own stamp on the squad after Jurgen Klopp’s glittering tenure.
Slot was backed after his title win in the transfer market, with the Reds smashing the transfer record twice and spending a record £446million on seven new players last summer.
Liverpool’s underwhelming performance across the board this term has led for some to call for Slot’s exit, but the former Feyenoord boss insisted that there was no reason to believe he would not remain in-post next season.
