With an opportunity to move ten points clear of third-placed Chelsea and nine points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, this trip to the south represented a high-level test for the team that currently sits top of the Premier League standings. With this game in hand being carried out before reverting to that circumstance by New Year’s Eve, the ultimate ambition of the Liverpool head coach, Arne Slot, would have been to pile as much pressure as possible on the other two clubs in this season’s apparent three-horse race. The Hammers were deemed to be somewhat more difficult to beat, with an air of consistency being re-engineered in the ranks of the East London squad.
Within this Super Sunday encounter, the rhetoric that it may be a tough away day was dispelled by an extraordinary display of pace, power, and brilliance by Liverpool, especially their attacking talisman, Mohamed Salah.
Through a scintillating first half was trickery and surging runs, the Egyptian King was at times unplayable against a team not able to match the level of the world’s best player. After a good early effort was saved by Areola, it would see a wonderful individual assist transpired for this game’s man of the match as he spun to assist Cody Gakpo for the game’s second goal.
His own opening goal was a smart and clinical effort from the edge of the box, as the record-breaking attacker curled his effort inside the near post to create a deserved 0-3 advantage. As the Reds contributed to a one-sided contest, the second half was again a rampant display of ferocious endeavour, one which allowed chances to fall for the 32-year-old on multiple occasions.
As the game progressed to an unassailable 0-4, the scores ended with one more brilliant goal due to the penetrating run by Salah, who was able to travel at speed and create the opening and assist for Diogo Anita to round off the scoring in a dominant encounter.
With Liverpool surging to a brilliant lead at the top of the Premier League table, it is their number 11 that is the driving force towards ultimate success. With Player of the Year awards to be decided in the coming months, there is only one man who looks likely to sweep the board and show the world why Liverpool Football Club must do everything in their power to agree to a new long-term contract and allow their legendary attacker to torment his opponents for many years to come.
Next up is Manchester United, where Anfield and Mohamed Salah await.
