Sébastien Pocognoli has decisions to make in midfield. Denis Zakaria started in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Pafos, but following his red card against Stade Rennais last weekend, the club captain will be suspended when AS Monaco host Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday night.

Zakaria is the obvious choice alongside Lamine Camara in the midfield. The question is therefore who will replace him against PSG? Pocognoli has said that Paul Pogba is an “option”. The Frenchman made his comeback last week, after 26 months without playing a professional football match.

Pogba’s absence against Pafos explained

Despite his nine minutes against Les Rennais, he didn’t feature at all against Pafos in midweek, with Pocognoli explaining that it wasn’t fitness-related. “We tried to bring a bit more going forward,” explained the Monaco manager in a press conference attended by Get French Football News. The Paul option was a bit more defensive, but he was ready, and he will be ready tomorrow, too.”

Asked whether Pogba could start against PSG, Pocognoli responded, “We have enough quality in our core to compensate for [Zakaria’s] absence. Paul is obviously an option, but we have to take things by steps. We are moving in the right direction and we hope to push him to have more minutes on the pitch.”
