Monterrey erupted as Morocco clinched a place in the World Cup last 16, with crowds lining the streets to salute the team coach.
According to L'Équipe, the Mexican city hosted the Morocco v Netherlands tie, which finished 1-1 before the Atlas Lions won 3-2 on penalties overnight from Monday to Tuesday.
As the squad left the stadium, videos on the national team’s Instagram showed supporters applauding along the route. Many wore Morocco red, while plenty sported Mexico’s green.
One clip captured singing and a brass band, plus a young man holding a placard in Spanish thanking Morocco. Another showed players and staff stepping off the coach to applause, most smiling and waving.
It was Monterrey’s final World Cup fixture. The other matches there were South Africa v South Korea 1-0, Tunisia v Japan 0-4 and Sweden v Tunisia 5-1 in the group stage.
Morocco face Canada in the last 16 on four July in Houston.
