José Mourinho initially backed Rodrigo Rêgo in Benfica’s first team, but the 22-year-old has since slipped back to the B team and seen his minutes shrink.
According to Glorioso 1904, Mourinho used the youngster on either wing and even argued he could operate full time at left wing-back in a back three. That faith opened the door to senior action, though the picture has shifted.
Rêgo has returned to the B team, fitting again into Nélson Veríssimo’s plans. Even so, he has struggled to assert himself regularly and his influence has waned.
His last start came in early March in the win over Penafiel. He then remained on the bench against Feirense and Farense, before appearing as a substitute against Paços de Ferreira.
Under contract until 2028, Rêgo could yet re-enter Mourinho’s thinking if he regains prominence with the B team. His immediate prospects will depend on performances in the next matches.
This season he has played 24 competitive games, 17 in the Segunda Liga, three in the Liga Portugal, two in the Liga Revelação, one in the Champions League and one in the Taça de Portugal. Across 1,478 minutes he has two goals and two assists, and he is valued at 900 thousand euros.
