Benfica won the decisive derby at Alvalade in the 30th round of the Liga Portugal Betclic.
Glorioso 1904 highlights the significance of the result for the coach’s long-running record in this fixture.
Mourinho is now unbeaten in 10 meetings with Sporting, with seven wins and three draws.
Their first clash came in 2000, when Mourinho, then Benfica coach, beat Sporting 3-0 at the Estádio da Luz, a match that proved to be his final game before resigning hours later.
More than two decades on, the Setúbal-born coach again left a derby satisfied, confirming the positive trend in his head-to-head and underlining the team’s consistency in high-stakes games, while maintaining an unbeaten league run.
Another key moment saw Anatoliy Trubin save a penalty, his second spot-kick stop of the season, a contribution that probably helped secure the result.
With the derby behind them, Mourinho’s side now visit Moreirense on 25 April at 18:00, in the 31st round at the Estádio Comendador Joaquim de Almeida Freitas.
