According to Record, José Mourinho’s friend Eládio Paramés said Real Madrid informed Benfica more than a month ago that they would pay to release the coach from his deal.

He stated the Spaniards had formalised to Benfica an intention to pay seven million to free Mourinho, then, more than a week ago, confirmed they would pay the contractually stipulated 15 million after Florentino Pérez took office.

His remarks suggested Benfica had known since early May of an agreement between Mourinho and Real Madrid. Mourinho also appeared in a video for Pérez’s candidacy while still under contract with Benfica.

On 16 May, the eve of the Estoril match, Mourinho said he was unaware of any offer from Real Madrid. He explained his agent had met Benfica and planned to send him a proposal on Sunday, adding that no Real Madrid offer had been presented, and that he would have asked to receive it on Sunday before considering it.

If Pérez is re-elected as Real Madrid president, the Portuguese coach’s move would be completed by activating the release clause in his current contract. Should that happen, Real Madrid would pay 15 million euros to Benfica.
