José Mourinho has lodged a case at the European Court of Human Rights against Türkiye, alleging his freedom of expression was breached during his time at Fenerbahçe.
The court said the Portuguese coach filed the application in March 2025, contesting Turkish Football Federation sanctions imposed in late 2024 for statements and conduct deemed unsporting.
The TFF’s Disciplinary Board handed Mourinho a one-match ban and two fines totalling about €18,000, citing behaviour directed at rival supporters and members of the refereeing team.
In his submission, Mourinho argues the case was not examined by an independent and impartial body and says he was never formally notified of the decision.
The European Court of Human Rights has declared the complaint admissible and has sent a series of questions to the TFF as the proceedings move forward.
Mourinho left Fenerbahçe in August last year after a little over one season at the Istanbul club, then signed for Benfica the following month, succeeding Bruno Lage.
