José Mourinho is the 'favoured candidate' for the Real Madrid job should Álvaro Arbeloa be sacked according to reports.

Arbeloa took over from Xabi Alonso in January having previously been in charge of the club's B team. Real Madrid have yet to really get going under Arbeloa though and the 43-year-old is expected to be dismissed in summer.

There had been talks of José Mourinho returning to the club which had been dismissed. However, according to journalists Mario Cortegana and David Ornstein of The Athletic that could still happen with Mourinho the favourite of club president Florentino Pérez.

The current Benfica manager, whose team are currently second in the league while remaining undefeated, and his contract with the Portuguese sides lasts until the end of next season with a release clause of €3 million (approx £2.6m).

Mourinho was of course in the dugout for Benfica for their games against Real Madrid this season including the one that saw Vinícius Júnior suffer abuse.

During his previous stint with Real Madrid, Mourinho won one La Liga title and a Copa del Rey and finished with a total record of 178 games played of which 128 were wins, 28 draws, and 22 defeats.
