After the draw with Casa Pia, José Mourinho met the Benfica squad again, resuming an internal discussion and urging greater intensity with a full tilt for second place.
Record reports that he revisited his public criticisms, addressed the group collectively rather than singling out individuals, and sought to stir pride through to the end of the season.
Inside the camp there is acceptance that the title is virtually out of reach, but six games remain. Mourinho underlined the need to win them and keep alive the chance of finishing second, seen as crucial for Champions League access and the club’s finances.
The draw in Rio Maior hurt morale, which he moved to counter. He urged a rebuild of confidence before important fixtures, including the approaching derby, and called for unity with an immediate response.
He also voiced displeasure at passivity and a lack of capacity to create imbalances. Mourinho did not apologise for previous remarks suggesting he might avoid using some players, but reiterated the need to raise competitive levels and honour the Benfica shirt.
