MRI scans have confirmed that Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has suffered torn cruciate ligaments, according to Uruguayan journalist Rodri Vazquez.
The Man United star was stretchered off in Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the early hours of Saturday during their final World Cup game.
Ugarte suffered a left knee injury and will now return to Europe to begin his recovery and rehabilitation under the guidance of the Red Devils’ medical staff.
It is unknown for how long the midfielder will be out, but he is set for an extended absence after sustaining a knee ligament injury.
Ugarte could miss up to a year of action due to the nature of the injury, and Man United will hope he makes a speedy recovery.
He landed awkwardly as he approached a challenge on Spain midfielder Pedri, and he will be desperate to return to action as soon as possible.
Tests will continue to be carried out on him to determine the severity of the injury, but he is likely to undergo surgery.
The Red Devils will look to sign a replacement despite already agreeing a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, with West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes a top target.
They have recently reached out to the Portuguese midfielder’s representatives to improve the personal terms they are offering him, while direct talks with the Hammers are also planned.
More names are likely to emerge in the coming days as Man United want to sign two more midfielders and strengthen their squad depth for next season.
