Thomas Müller is already being touted as a future executive at FC Bayern. But anyone hoping for a quick return of the club legend after he retires is likely to be disappointed by the 36-year-old’s latest comments. The 2014 World Cup champion has now spoken surprisingly clearly about his future plans.
Since his departure from FC Bayern in the summer of 2025, speculation about a possible return by Thomas Müller has not ceased.
Hardly any other former player is so naturally associated with a future leadership role at the German record champions. Many fans see Müller as a future sporting director, manager, or even club president.
But the 36-year-old has now rejected these very expectations—at least for the time being.
During his introduction as a brand ambassador for the dietary supplement manufacturer “superum,” Müller spoke in an interview with BILD about his future —and surprised everyone with remarkably candid remarks.
When asked whether Bayern fans can hope for a return, Müller responded positively in principle, but also very cautiously. “In the long term, I’m not ruling anything out. I can’t imagine that becoming relevant anytime soon,” explained the former Bayern star.
Particularly noteworthy: Müller made it clear that he by no means takes a leadership role at FC Bayern for granted. “You can’t just take on a leadership position at FC Bayern on a whim,” emphasized Munich’s all-time record holder.
In doing so, Müller strikes a markedly different tone than many former pros who seek roles as officials immediately after retiring.
In this context, Müller explicitly referred to the statements made by Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Both Bayern icons had repeatedly emphasized in the past that top positions at the record-breaking club require intensive preparation.
Müller apparently fully agrees with this view. He wants to first gain experience, learn new things, and develop himself in a targeted manner before considering a potential leadership role.

In fact, Müller currently seems to have no concrete idea of what his professional path will look like after his playing career.
While he would like to remain connected to the sport in some form, even staying in the soccer business is by no means certain at this point. “Do I want to stay in the soccer business? Do I want to try my hand at coaching? Those are the questions I’ll ask myself when the time comes,” Müller explained.
It is particularly important to him not to make decisions out of habit or convenience.
For now, Müller seems intent on pursuing other interests anyway.
The former national team player revealed that he would like to focus more on golf in the future. He also joked about his former teammate Arjen Robben, who has drawn attention to himself with extraordinary athletic challenges since retiring. “I’m thinking more along the lines of golf,” Müller said with a smile.
Despite his clear statements, the door for a future return to Säbener Straße remains wide open. Müller expressly does not rule out a role at FC Bayern. However, he makes it clear that such a move will only happen once he feels sufficiently prepared.
For Bayern fans, this means one thing above all: patience.
A quick return for the club legend is not currently in sight. In the long term, however, Thomas Müller could very well take on an important role with the German record champions—just not right away.
